Grower and Editor McPherson Puts Passion into Print,
Publishes Fourth Edition of One-of-a-Kind, All-Peach Cookbook
Pennsylvania fruit grower
Gail McPherson recently issued a fourth edition of her 200-page Passion for
Peaches Cookbook, a tell-all with recipes featuring the Queen of Fruits. It
includes an updated section on the many varieties and characteristics of peaches
available on the market today. The book remains one-of-a-kind.
Gail McPherson loves the color, the textures, the aroma and most of all the
taste of peaches fresh, frozen, canned, dried and cooked in any way. In 1976,
she directed her infatuation to collecting recipes and created the first-ever,
all-peach cookbook. The book shares more than 300 recipes that include the peach
as a main or featured ingredient in every imaginable food from breakfast
pancakes to a midnight snack of Peach Pizza!
"I gathered favorite recipes from family, friends, customers and fruit
growers throughout the country," said Ms. McPherson, who visited orchards
nationwide while she and her husband Paul served for many years on the National
Peach Council.
Peaches can be added to beverages, main courses and vegetables while they
often star in appetizers, salads, quick snacks, and delicious desserts.
McPherson details instructions on preserving wonderful summer peaches through
canning, freezing and drying.
"For the new book's cover, I chose the photo of a young neighbor eating a
peach from our Maple Lawn Farms orchard," said Ms. McPherson. "Her bright, blue
eyes and winning grin show her pleasure in every bite of that sun-drenched peach
she's devouring. Peaches add color and flavor to almost any recipe."
The cookbook retails for $13 and can also be ordered individually or
wholesale for distribution in farm markets and bookstores. Send orders to Maple
Lawn Farms, Inc., Attention Gail McPherson, 251 East Maple Lawn Road, New Park,
PA or call 717.382.4878 x100. It is also available online from
www.maplelawnfarms.com.
The one-of-a-kind Passion for Peaches Cookbook delivers recipes for preparing
the acclaimed "Queen of Fruit" in every possible way.
The book includes recipes organized by categories from breakfast to
beverages, from pickles to sinfully delicious midnight snacks. Attached is a
recipe for "Upside-Down Hershey Peach Cake." A favorite from the book, the
recipe combines the sweet taste and bright color of the peach with the rich
flavor of chocolate in a luscious, eye-appealing dessert.
An ancient Chinese proverb promises, "Eat a peach and live forever."
Originally from China and revered there as "The Tree of Life," the peach brought
its rich history of appeal first to Europe and then to the New World. Passion
for Peaches Cookbook includes tidbits of history along with a complete listing
of peach varieties, characteristics and uses. The editor also shares tips for
choosing, preparing, preserving and enjoying peaches.
