Inside Maple Lawn Farm
The McPherson family has been living on the same farm in rural Southern York
County for at least 135 years. But that doesn't mean the farm has not changed
with the times as a grain, fruit and berries operation.
A few years ago, Paul and Gail McPherson developed Maple Lawn Farms "as a
definite destination" for visitors from York County, and the Bel Air and Towson
areas of Maryland, to purchase fruits and berries during August to October
season.
The McPhersons' daughter, Sarah and son, Hugh are involved in the family
enterprises. When Hugh graduated from college, he brought back to the farm "his
interests in marketing and entertainment," his father said. Looking for a way to
extend that summer season, Hugh, developed the Maize Quest concept for Maple
Lawn Farms. The entertainment adventure program - which features a multi-acre
maze of corn stalks - brought more than 36,000 people last year to the farm
located below New Park.
Maple Lawn Farms traces its deed back to 1867 and was among the first Century
Farms in York County to receive that designation in 1976. It was incorporated as
a business in 1947.
Today, several businesses are based at the farm. In addition to Maple Lawn
Farms, Inc. there are: Maple Lawn Land Improvement, Inc. Maple Lawn
Entertainment, Inc. (Maize Quest) and Hugh McPherson's newest business MT
WireFree, designed to bring wireless communications to Southern York County and
Northern Maryland. Maple Lawn Farms has its payroll and checking accounts with
Allfirst Bank and works with the Relationship Managers at the branch in the
center of Fawn Grove.
"They give us absolutely personal attention," Gail said. A former teacher,
Gail proudly noted that Allfirst's Juanita Joines was a student at Kennard Dale
High School when she taught there.
